Lindemann, Howell nail down all-conference honors

In terms of overall success, no other conference team came close to Francis Howell. The Vikings, who backed into the Class 6 playoffs in 2008 with a 3-7 record, earned every bit of their first outright GAC South title since 1998. They were giant-slayers in Week six when they defeated the mighty Fort Zumwalt West Jaguars and halted a conference win streak that spanned more than four seasons.

"This year our kids came out every Friday night with the attitude that no matter what - win, lose or draw - we would leave everything out on the field," Howell coach Bryan Koch said. "They started that attitude in January for their off-season workouts, so I'm glad to be a part of that and see their hard work pay off in wins during the football season."

Howell's success derived from 'D'

Backed by the nastiest defense in the GAC South, the Francis Howell football team accomplished what coach Bryan Koch envisioned when he took over the program in 2006.

The Vikings finished 2009 with an 8-3 record, marking their highest win total since 2002. Much of the credit goes to Howell's defense, which allowed a meager 17.4 points per game and had five players named to the all-GAC South first-team defense.

Vikings try to become Jay-slayers

After seeing his opponent in Friday's Class 6 sectional football game - Jefferson City - outscore the opposition 137-22 in three district games this season, Francis Howell football coach Bryan Koch knows he and his team are going to have to ready for a rough road at Adkins Stadium.

Even though both teams enter the game with identical 8-2 records, it would be hard for anyone to match the Jays' 40.0 points per game average on offense.

DeSmet trounces Francis Howell for district title

Heading into the Class 6, District 5 title game, the Francis Howell Vikings had a physical, feisty club that came to DeSmet with upset on their minds.

But DeSmet playmakers Steve Kaiser and Malcolm Agnew were not about to let the Vikings celebrate on their field Friday night.

Howell braces for DeSmet

In year’s past, Francis Howell’s football game at DeSmet on Friday would have taken center stage as a winner-take-all district championship.

But since both teams have already qualified for MSHSAA’s diluted playoff system, the Vikings (8-1) and Spartans (9-0) will decide who is the top seed in Class 6 District 5. What’s at stake really is a chance to host a playoff game instead of likely traveling a couple of hours to Adkins Stadium in Jefferson City to face the powerful Jays. Jeff City (7-2) hasn’t won District 6 yet, but can with a win against Hickman (4-5).

Howell playoff bound again

If the Francis Howell football team was to make the playoffs again in 2009, Howell coach Bryan Koch wanted to make sure the Vikings earned it.

"We got to the playoffs by mishap last year and when we got there we got it handed to us," said Koch, whose team made the Class 6 playoffs in 2008 despite a 3-7 regular season record and a loss in their final district game. "These guys set a team goal back in January specifically to get back to the playoffs and win. And they’ve done everything they needed to do to make it happen." ...
